Hippie credentials and a granola recipe

For whatever reason, my parents seem to be in doubt about the fact that I was raised by hippies. I don't need their verification anyway. I got proof.

You may have been know that you were raised by hippies if...

...you think Brewer's Yeast is a topping for popcorn.

...you were disappointed more than once as a kid to discover that those were carob chips in your trail mix.

...you know the difference between silken and firm tofu.

...you have Bragg's in your fridge and Bronner's under your sink.

...your baby food was cooked from Moosewood Cookbook recipes.

...you think its normal to consider swimsuits "optional."

...the "Grace" said around your childhood dinner table began with the phrase, "Earth who gave us all this food..."

...the majority of your childhood vacations were spent in Humbolt County.

If you were raised by hippies, than you already know that granola doesn't come from a box. If you didn't know, than I have a recipe for you!

A couple of years ago, mom and I drove from Spokane, Washington to Nelson, British Columbia. Nelson is a picturesque destination for snow sports in the winter and mountain biking in the summer - worth a return trip. We stayed at the Cloudside Inn, a modern and comfortable B&B in town. They had a killer granola for breakfast and were willing to share the recipe.

All ingredients below are raw.  (Warning! Large volume - feeds a houseful!!)

·           6 cups:              large rolled oats
·           1 cup:                rye flakes
·           1 cup:                shredded coconut
·           2 cups:              sunflower seeds
·           1 cup:                sesame seeds
·           1 cup:                pumpkin seeds
·           1 cup:                sliced almonds
·           1 cup:                cashew nuts / peanuts
·           1 cup                 wheat bran (optional)

·           ¼ cup:               sunflower or canola oil
·           1 cup:                maple syrup

After cooking, add:

·         2 cups:                           dark raisins or currants
·         as desired:         other dried fruit (apricots look good)

Add all dry ingredients, oil, and maple syrup together.  Mix, spread evenly on baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees, turning the mix every 10-15 minutes until mix is an even light golden brown – time depends on oven, but approximately 40 minutes in total.

Leave to cool and then add the raisins or currants.

Happy crunching!

Hahahaha. You are too funny and so right.
Was brewer's yeast not invented as a popcorn topping? Popcorn just doesn't taste the same without it.
Why was it that m&m's tasted so much better at friend's houses? Oh right, theirs were made from chocolate, not carob.

Cringe worthy! I remember most of those from childhood. My mother would draw the line at skinny dipping. Our vacations weren't in Humboldt county, but, were anywhere you could enjoy nature for free.

Yep. She was so not a hippie, but totally embraced the lifestyle.

How great that you were able to get the recipe from them. This sounds like a delicious granola.

Kate and Robyn- I wonder what my kids will write about me. Probably that they were neglected because I wouldn't let them have lunchables. Oh wait, that was my mom that would not buy me lunchables.

Lisa - I am pretty sure my family will be getting granola for Christmas this year from me!

oh man, yes, yes, yes and yes. Feeling totally busted. Although- I'd say we're a bit of a new kind of hippie--we're 2nd generation. I've reacted a bit to my upbringing, there's always brewers yeast in the popcorn, but carob's not allowed in my kitchen, nor is anyone allowed to chant "we all come from the goddess." Happy to find you--sent over here by Em.

I love the idea of adding rye flakes. My granola batch is running over so I will add it to my new batch.

Thanks for the recipe.

Well I wasn't raised by hippies by I sure am raising some hippies myself. Granola recipe looks great. I am partial to my own recipe but this one makes me think I should branch out a bit. Belated thanks for adding this to the Vegetarian Foodie Friday carnival. Hope to see you again!
